Level 3 Facilitates GSA’s Migration to Meet IPv6 Mandate

14/08/08

It was revealed on 13 August that Level 3 communications’ had been instrumental in enabling the United States Services Administration (GSA) to become IPv6 compliant.

The current IP protocol used on the Internet is IPv4.  The ongoing rise in Internet use, combined with bandwidth and capacity demands, are putting a huge strain on the IPv4 address space, which is running out.

IPv6 is the next generation protocol to replace the IPv4 Internet version. Some network operators are already converting to IPv6 technology. The GSA is one of that group, following Level 3’s successful migration from their IPv4 network to IPv6.

Edward Morche, General Manager of Level 3’s Federal Segment said that they were pleased to have played such an important role in the GSA’s transition to IPv6.

He added: “Due to the size and scale of the Level 3 network, our company has been a leader in the development, adoption and deployment of new standards, and we intend to follow a similar path with regard to IPv6.”

The GSA is the fist civilian agency in America to be in compliance with the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) mandate to use the next generation IPv6 network.
