Application availability 'should be no gamble'

21/07/2008

Business continuity should not involve gambling when it comes to the availability of applications, it has been asserted.

The suggestion comes from Dale Vile and Jon Collins, commentators with industry analyst Freeform Dynamics.

According to the authors, research has found that 57 per cent of firms experience availability disruptions on a monthly basis or more frequently.

One in five have also lost money or brand reputation once per quarter as a result of interrupted operations.

"When systems go down, the disruption can be widely felt and even lead to tangible damage to the business or its brand," the analysts write.

"Against this background, it doesn't make sense to gamble with systems availability."

For businesses which find they are unable to implement a reliable storage network of their own, a managed connectivity solution could be an alternative.

An example of this is ControlCircle's Metro Fibre Network, a ring of London data centres which operates on a service level agreement to a target uptime rate of 99.999 per cent.
