Switch and Data PAIX traffic Up 112% in the past year

15/10/2008

Switch and Data revealed traffic on its PAIX Internet exchanges grew at around twice the rate of overall Internet traffic in the past year.

The data centre provider said the growth was a result of international broadband, “eyeball” networks which are increasingly choosing to peer with major U.S Internet content sites in their Palo Alto and New York exchanges.

The company claims PAIX traffic has grown by 112% in the past year versus 65% global Internet traffic growth rate.

The company’s PAIX Palo Alto site was the world’s first Internet exchange and has historically been a major site for Asian networks to peer with U.S. content providers on America’s west coast. Traffic in the Palo Alto exchange grew by 67% in the past year.

The company said their New York PAIX is the fastest growing Internet exchange in the New York/New Jersey metro region, stating that average traffic on the New York Exchange increased by 295% versus the next fastest growing New York exchange, which has grown by 50%.

Switch and Data claim growth on the east coast has been driven by European networks coming to New York peering traffic with U.S. content companies.
