Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is the most important protocol of the Internet. It works by maintaining a table of IP networks or 'prefixes' which dictate network accessibility among groups of routers known as autonomous systems. In layman's terms, the BGP will enable the autonomous systems to establish loop free routes to the destination address.
A Brief Overview of BGP
BGP only holds one route to each destination, the routers job is to pick one for each destination based on attributes from each upstream provider. The router picks the way with the least hops irrespective of whether it takes longer to reach the destination, or the cost. For example, to get to the bbc.co.uk network, BGP might go via one provider, but if the individual upstream paths were to be tested, an alternative provider might offer a more efficient path.
A hosting firm is only as good as its ability to deliver information with precision and lightening speed. Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is responsible for the size and rate at which messages are exchanged between the server and the client, and makes sure the data is sent and acknowledged. ControlCircle actively monitors up to 10,000 TCP sessions in order to quickly determine the top destination flows available. The next step is to probe these destinations to all of our BGP providers via policy based routing, and a system of GRE (Generic Routing Encapsulation) tunnels used to secure virtual private networks. Traffic can then be transferred dynamically to the best provider at that time.
Additionally, we keep a close eye on packet loss and TCP re-transmissions so that traffic can be swiftly moved away from a potentially problematic provider.
