MPLS (Multi Protocol Label Switching) allows multiple services to be provided over the same network. Effectively, MPLS creates a VPN (Virtual Private Network). A MPLS domain is designed to support multiple networks, vastly reducing costs and greatly enhancing efficiency, capacity and capability.
MPLS can be used to support:
• Internet access
• Point to point Layer 2 VPN (VLL)
• Multipoint Layer 2 VPN (VPLS)
• Level3 Direct Access
Using the same infrastructure allows MPLS label stacking, enabling customer traffic to be separated from core network traffic and permitting different levels of service. In this way, different SLAs can be defined across your network.
Internet Access
When MPLS provides Internet access it greatly reduces the memory and CPU requirements of uplink equipment. Only a few designated PE (Provider Edge) routers are now needed to run a full BGP table. The net effect is seen in speed of access and network performance. Everything is made smoother, faster and more reliable.
Layer 2 VPN (VLL)
This point to point pseudo wire circuit can be used to replace physical links. It defines how Layer 2 packets can be transported across MPLS networks using protocols such as ATM, Ethernet, and SONET. Essentially, this means that it can replace an existing dedicated facility without requiring reconfiguration, regardless of upper layer protocols. That means business at the lowest cost, compared to architectural and network rebuilding and costly reconfiguration.
Multipoint Layer 2 VPN (VPLS)
Using extensive VLL technology this type of service provision allows multiple sites to interconnect, simulating a LAN switch. The MPLS domain learns information and dynamically assigns labels to end devices managing business load as a result of its own intuitive system intelligence. In-built systems prevent error loops.
Level3 Direct Access
Leveraging VLL technology, this type of service is mapped into a 1:1 relation with RSVP-TE providing the highest level of QoS and resiliency.
